9 “FREE” REASONS TO VISIT WEST INN & SUITES IN CARLSBAD, CA

My husband and I took our kids to Carlsbad, CA a while back and it is still one of our fondest memories.  West Inn & Suites was the perfect place for us; family friendly while maintaining an upscale ambiance.

Hotel near Legoland

While summer may be in full swing, many savvy travelers are thinking ahead to fall, when rates drop, the crowds disperse, and the weather in San Diego remains a sunny oasis for travelers.  With endless options for outdoor recreation and access to world-class attractions, no other destination echoes ‘endless summer’ quite like the seaside community of Carlsbad.  West Inn & Suites, TripAdvisor’s #1 ranked Carlsbad hotel with rates starting at $159, offers nine free reasons to plan a San Diego getaway this fall season.

  1. October is Kid’s Free Month in San Diego – Take advantage of San Diego’s popular Kids Free Month this October with new travel incentives for families. Across Carlsbad, kids can enjoy a variety of complimentary attraction admissions, museum entries and free meals. Book your stay at West Inn & Suites, and receive free amenities such as: hot buffet breakfast, no resort fees, Wi-Fi, parking, movie rentals, games, and two in-room waters upon arrival.
  2. Pop Up Beach Party – With average temperatures in the 70s and 80s, fall is one of the best times of the year to enjoy Carlsbad’s seven miles of uncrowded beaches.  At your request, we’ll pack the hotel shuttle van with boogie boards, towels, umbrella, sand toys, and a cooler filled with snacks and beverages for a fun day at one of the local Carlsbad beaches.
  3. Let the West Chauffeurs do the Driving – Leave your car at the hotel and let our free shuttle service take you anywhere within five miles of the hotel in Carlsbad.  Added bonus:  taking the shuttle means free parking at Legoland, the beach and area attractions.  Note:  Shuttle service is based on availability and runs during Legoland hours.
  4. Pet Pampering for Free – Every pet that checks into the hotel is welcomed at the front desk with a complimentary photo and in-room amenities such as beds, bowls, treats, and specially-formulated calming aromatherapy.  Note:  Pet fees apply.
  5. Musical Moments – Just mention “MMM Tickets” when you make your reservation and we’ll make sure you have two free tickets to the Museum of Making Music placed in your room.
  6. “They Say It’s Your Birthday” – Tell us who’s birthday you’ll be celebrating while staying at West Inn & Suites when you make a reservation and we’ll make sure to place a special birthday cake and balloons in your room.
  7. When Was the Last Time Happy Hour was Free? – At West In & Suites, we offer a seasonal pour of complimentary specialty wines and beer from 5:00-6:00 p.m. for our 21 and over guests.
  8. Evening Nightcap – To add a perfect ending to your fun filled days, treat yourself to complimentary fresh baked cookies and milk in our cozy living room located right off the hotel lobby.
  9. Free Room Service – It’s true, we don’t charge for room service delivery; you’ll see the same menu and prices as if you were sitting in our Bistro West restaurant.

Disneyland Vacation (Tips and Tricks)

If you’ve been around a while, you know we started saving for a debt free (no credit card) trip to Disneyland.  Many gift cards and monthly deposits later we were ready.  We set off on our road trip for four nights and three days in the parks.  Hopefully, you follow along on Instagram for up to date pictures and tips!

Disneyland Vacation on a Budget

Food

We definitely went on a budget vacation but I tend to like to splurge a bit when it comes to trips.  In this case, splurging met character dining and restaurant reservations in the park.  Eating in the parks can really add up but it was so worth it.  Each restaurant was pretty accommodating when it came to my little vegan so don’t worry too much about dietary restrictions.  We did research before arriving but don’t be afraid to ask!

Tip: Make a late dinner reservation at the Carnation Cafe for right around when the evening parade starts.  They don’t allow people to stand in front of the patio so the view is pretty nice and being able to avoid the crowds made it a fabulous experience for us all.

Disneyland Parade Tips

Souvenirs

We gave each kiddo a budget for souvenirs (using gift cards we’d been given throughout the year) and let them shop on the last day.  In addition to their own gift cards, I picked up some Disney items on sale and brought them along, hidden in my suitcase.  Each day the kids found these little souvenirs in our hotel room. We also tried our hand at pin trading.

Tip: I picked up some Disney pins online (be careful of fakes or scrapers, but you can find great deals online) and the kids loved finding pin boards in shops and restaurants.  We purchased some mystery pins in the park, too, and traded between ourselves.  I highly recommend this activity; pin trading was a really fun experience!

Hotel

We stayed at a wonderful Good Neighbor hotel within walking distance, Hotel Menage.  It isn’t right across the street but it is down the street and the price is so reasonable.  Accommodations were clean and friendly and the view of the Disneyland fireworks is one of the best aspects of this hotel.  If the walk proves too much (I mean Disneyland is ALL about walking) Hotel Menage is right on the ART line, in fact, it was the last stop on the way to Disneyland, making it super fast to get to the park.  My husband and I agree, we’d definitely stay at this hotel near Disneyland again!

Tip: Hotel Menage has a 24 hour pool (that is heated at night) which is the perfect way to end a long day of traveling!

Disneyland Hotel Walking Distance

The kids are still talking about all the amazing things they say and experienced on our fun adventure.  I’m so glad we were able to take them and have zero debt involved.  Disneyland can be pricey but with a plan and a budget you can make it work and make some amazing memories.

Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa (Chandler, AZ)

LLandLoL received two complementary nights to be able to share our thoughts and experience.  As always, my opinions are 100% my own.

Staycation Vacation ArizonaI am a huge fan of staycations.  That[s when you vacation in or around your home.  You check in to a nearby hotel and pretend you are a million miles away while still being close enough to save on travel costs and rush home for emergencies.  Don’t get me wrong, I love exploring new places and travelling to old favorites, but sometimes, when time is short or travelers are small, it really is best to staycation.

wildhorsepass5

On a recent three day weekend we decided to travel to Chandler, Arizona (we live in Phoenix, Chandler is an approx. 30 min drive) and do a relaxing, fun staycation with the whole family at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa.  Because we were travelling close by, we were able to invite our teenager’s best friend.  The age gap between our teen and next oldest is 7 years, plus, we’re the only girls.  Sometimes a teen just needs her bestie, right?  We got two adjoining rooms during a special holiday rate (check out all the upcoming deals, including a special 4th of July holiday.  The activities for the weekend look like such fun!).

Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Vacation

While I did debate checking out Aji Spa (again, there were special deals!) I opted to stick with the family and we enjoyed a whole weekend of relaxing by the pool.  The pool was beautiful allowed for all the kids (ages 13 down to 3) to have fun swimming, playing, lounging and water sliding!  Yes, the pool has a water slide for guests and the line was never long!  The pool side activities kept the kids entertained and our teenager even won herself a free smoothie during one of the activities.

Water Slide at the Sheraton

The location is fantastic, too, if you do decide to leave the property (though, really, you don’t need to for anything).  There is a shuttle that runs to the nearby (and I mean like down the road) casino every 10 minutes or so and there is a big outlet mall only minutes away, too!

So go enjoy some nights ‘away’ and check out Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa!

Anniversary Weekend at Westin Kierland Reort and Spa in Scottsdale

My husband and I just celebrated another year of marriage (yay!) and as a present to ourselves we wanted to ‘get away’ for a bit.  Can you relate?  We have 5 kiddos, so getting away anywhere can be problematic but we worked it out with family and friends and figured out a weekend that worked for everyone.  The time frame we had was limited so we didn’t want to waste hours in the car or at the airport (plus flights aren’t cheap!). A local staycation was certainly our best option and I knew exactly where to go; Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona.

westinhotelcollage

If you have been reading this blog for a while, you might remember our amazing family staycation a couple years ago at Westin Kierland.  I remembered how wonderful the staff was, the gorgeous view and how it was the perfect place for families AND couples.

westinexplorerelaxplay

My expectations were, of course, met (and exceeded).  The experience was perfection.  We relaxed, played, drank and explored.  The ideal weekend away, for us.  The view was phenomenal (as it was last time) and beds comfortable.  A comfortable bed is a top priority for us, especially on a rare weekend without kids, where sleep and rest are actually attainable.

Scottsdale, AZ

We booked the Mojito Madness class at the deseo bar just before the restaurant opened.  It was fun to see how they make on of my favorite drinks with fresh ingredients.  The class came with an appetizer and the bartender was wonderful and made suggestions (which were spot on, we loved the shrimp and kobe choices).  We had dinner at deseo, one of the restaurants in the resort.  I’d consider it ‘fancy’ and perfect for an anniversary, whether you are staying on the property or not.

westindeseocollage

This time around I did not make it to Agave Spa but I did see the amazing treatments being offered and might have to make a special trip one day in the near future for a Salted Lime & Tequila Body Glow or The Tequila Lime Refresh Facial.  Or maybe both?! Right now, you can grab a great deal on spa treatments!

westingoodbye

This summer Westin Kierland has some really affordable offers.  You can opt for dinning credit or FlowRider sessions on top of a great nightly rate with the Say Aloha Summer deal.

If you are looking locally or if you are traveling to Scottsdale, I highly recommend Westin Kierland Resort and Spa for families and couples. What amenities do you look for when booking a romantic weekend away?

West Inn and Suites + Bistro West in Carlsbad, CA

It is rare to find a hotel that is perfect for both families and/or a romantic get-away.  I found that elusive unicorn of a place on our last trip to Southern California at West Inn and Suites in Carlsbad, CA.

Hotel near Legoland

The hotel was beautiful inside and out and when I checked in while my husband and antsy children waited in the car I had a moment of dread.  This place was far to pretty and sophisticated to understand by ‘crew’.  I had quick and scary visions of my children barreling into the lobby and up the stairs like wild animals disturbing everyone.  Here’s the truth, though, my kids are *usually* pretty good and the hotel, while beautiful, has activities and services geared towards those of us with little people who travel with us.  Need an example?  Milk and cookies offered (free) in the evening to guests.  If milk and cookies don’t scream child-friendly, I don’t know what does.  Also, while checking in, I was given a chance to borrow movies for our room.  Many of which were children’s titles.  Complementary breakfast may seem like a business men/women perk, but for me?  It screams load up and fill up before heading out to LEGOLAND California, which is just a 5 min drive for the property.

Kid Friendly Hotel near San Diego

West Inn and Suites, as I mentioned, is gorgeous.  The rooms are beautiful and classic while still being comfortable.  I could snuggle up all night with my husband watching borrowed movies under the warm comforters.  Our trip included a 3 year old nestled in between us, but without that blonde baby, it would have been extremely romantic.

Carlsbad, CA hotel

West Inn and Suites has a couple restaurants on the property (but separate from the hotel, which I appreciate.  I am not local, but know that a great restaurant that I have to go through a hotel that I am not a guest at feels kind of weird) and we were lucky enough to try West Bistro, we were told the more casual of the two spots, but it was nicer than our usual ‘casual’ meal, which I loved for our ‘date’.  West Bistro has a farm to table approach and the taste and quality is apparent.  The food was, no exaggeration, magical.  The staff knowledgeable and friendly (the chef even came over to chat for a bit).  We left googly eyes and full of amazing, fresh, delicious food.

Hotel and Food near Legoland

Carlsbad is a wonderful option for spring break, family trips or a romantic get away and West Inn and Suites is perfect for all occasions.  The ambiance, staff, location and services all make it idea for families, business persons or couples.

Family Travel to Carlsbad, CA With ResorTime

Disclaimer: Some aspects of this vacation were complementary.  All opinions are, as always, 100% my own.

**Scroll down for your COUPON CODE for vacations rentals from ResorTime.com

If you’ve been here for a while, you know that Hubs and I have a goal of at least one family trip each year.  It don’t have to be extravagant or expensive but we want the kids to experience different things and places.  I was bit very early on with the travel bug so I want to share that with my family.  Hubs was on the opposite spectrum in his youth, travelling rarely, and he wants to give our kids more opportunities than he had, in regards to travel.

Family Travel California

This year we packed all the kids up into the minivan and headed to California.  I have been to many parts of CA but never Carlsbad, which is just north of San Diego (I place I have visited more than 20 times).  Carlsbad is laid back, quiet and really family oriented.  Let’s not forget, Carlsbad is home to LEGOLAND and I have three boys 5 and under.  I’d been considering a trip to LEGOLAND and wanted to do it before our oldest, the only girl, turned 13 and undoubtedly became a ‘too cool’ teenager.  Regardless, I knew she’d enjoy travelling and the beach. (Spoiler:  She had a ton of fun at LEGOLAND, too).

Carlsbad, CA Hotel

I won’t bore you with the travel details.  We  Hubs drove, kids drove us crazy, I packed too many snacks and we hit traffic.  All things we’d planned for.  We arrived about 30 minutes before our check-in time at Seapointe Resort, a ResorTime partner, but we were able to get right in and get our room keys right away.  I was given the run down of amenities, parking instructions, and info all about the resort and off I went to check out our home away from home for the next few days.

Budget Travel Tips

Our two bedroom condo with full kitchen was amazing!  Our family of six was just right for the two bedroom- we put the kids in one room, while Hubs and I claimed the master suite with the ocean view (all units faced the ocean, which was just across the street).  The kids quickly made the living area into a play room and made themselves right at home.  I brought some stuff for snacks but decided to head to the nearby grocery store to buy some items for meals, I knew spending some money at the store and utilizing the full kitchen would help us stay within budget.

Save Money On Vacation

Staying within budget is the only option for our big family when it comes to vacationing (or anything, really) so before I book any hotels I check out what they offer.  Having to take a family of 6 out to eat for each meal is a deal breaker; so high on my list of needs is a kitchen.  Location is another huge factor when booking a vacation spot.  We save money by using free shuttles or being close enough to local activities to walk.  Searching on ResorTime makes finding the perfect place for you and your families needs super simple.  You can find places in almost any location you are looking for, not just Carlsbad, CA (though, I highly recommend it for a family vacation).

Family Vacation in California

We spent the next couple of days enjoying the activities at Seapointe Resort, playing on the beach, relaxing, borrowing movies from the front desk, grilling and cooking and we even got to check out Grand Palisades Resort (which is a 7 min walk to LEGOLAND) and also a ResorTime resort.  The kids kept referring to our room(s)/condo as ‘home’ and even after we came back to Arizona, my youngest kept asking about our “California home”.  It really did feel like home!

Why Everybody Should Visit Berlin at Least Once

Everybody who goes to Berlin will tell you something different about the country. There’s one thing that resonates with just about everybody though: they love the place! Songs have even been written about the place! Berlin is full of fun and interesting things to do – everybody should visit there at least once. There are over 8 million visitors to Berlin each year. Here’s why I think you should join them:

Berlin is The Capital of Germany

Berlin is the capital of the great country Germany (who have recently won the World Cup!). If this isn’t reason to visit enough, I don’t know what is! Germany is a fascinating place, and the capital is somewhere everyone should see. So many important events have taken place here, and you can learn all about them!

You’ll Get to Experience the Fantastic Culture

For creative and exotic people, Berlin is the only place to be. The culture is very urban, and you’ll get to experience this just by walking on down the street.

You Can Party the Night Away

Love partying? Well, Berlin is your city! Not only do they have a load of fantastic nightclubs, they also only close when you want to go home. How amazing is that? You can party until you literally drop (I only recommend this if you have somebody to carry you home).

It’s Famous for Electronic Music

Love electronic, techno, and house music? Berlin is the home to this genre of music. Of course, you can experience many other styles here, but electronic music is prominent and has been since the 90s.

The Fashion and Shopping

For the shopaholics and fashionistas out there, you’ll love shopping in Berlin. There are multiple stores and boutiques, and there are plenty of fantastic designers out there selling their wares at reasonable prices. No breaking the bank for you! Many trends begin in this city!

The Art and Museums

Art and museums are ripe in Berlin. Museum lovers always flock to Berlin to get their educational/arty fix. Many of them are free to visit too!

The Food and Restaurants

Deciding where to eat in Berlin is always going to be a hard choice. You have a choice of fancy restaurants, classic eateries, and even street food vendors all serving up tasty morsels to satisfy your hunger.

The Old and New Mix Up

Berlin is constantly improving and transforming. This means that you’ll notice a mix up of old and new on arrival. Some areas are in progress, others look very futuristic, and others look almost antique. It’s fabulous! You can almost feel as if you’re in two different time zones at once.

The Price

Berlin isn’t a particularly expensive country. You can find pretty much everything you need at a reasonable price, including accommodation. Venere hotels in Berlin, for example, won’t break the bank.

Are you convinced that you need to visit Berlin yet? Or perhaps you’ve already been? Let me know what you think of this great place in the comments. Thanks for reading!

Planning and Saving for Disneyland

Disney on a BudgetI was recently invited to an amazing conference for Disney Social Media Moms (On the Road) #DisneySMMoms and got the inside scoop on Disney related stuff, as well as amazing info from some role-model worthy women (check out my social media for more on the conference).  This prompted me to really make a decision…it is time to seriously consider a family vacation to Disneyland!

We are big Disney fans in this house.  We show our DisneySide in some way everyday.  All six of us have our own Disney favorites; Jelly Bean, my red-headed 12 year old stepdaughter grew up loving Ariel and her resemblance to Merida is uncanny.  Seriously, people have stopped us and told us to seek out monetary compensation because clearly “Disney used her as a model!” My younger boys have watched all of the Toy Story movies over and over and most recently Frozen has been playing on a loop.  My husband’s favorite is by far The Sword in the Stone.  And I refuse to pick just one and since I am the writer of this article; I don’t have to!

Disney's Brave

Disney Snack

My oldest boy is now 5 and has been asking when he’ll get to visit the magical and mysterious land of Disney, or as you and I call it, Disneyland.  The younger two boys are blissfully unaware that there is a place, only 7 hours away, that houses all their favorite Disney characters, rides, food and magic.  Jelly Bean has been lucky enough in her short life of only 12 years to have visited Disneyland twice.  I have a burning desire to share the pixie dust with my kiddos and have become determined to take them in the next year.  It would be an especially amazing experience for my nephew (you can read about our Kinship Foster Care story here) who has never traveled and who’s future is somewhat uncertain and who might not get the chance to feel the Disney magic later in life.

We live on one income and our budget is very tight.  We don’t use credit cards so we’ll be saving old school for this trip; little by little.  I prefer this way because their is no debt involved and it gives our whole family something to work for and get excited about.  Would it be awesome to get some Disney instant gratification and go next month?  ABSOLUTELY!! Does that really work for my family of 6? Not really.

My first step in planning is to price out some trip prices.  Because I am hoping to take them around this time next year I can get a pretty good idea of how much a trip like this will cost.  Planning is half the fun (if you are new here let me introduce myself, “Hi, I am Nicole and I LOVE to plan and organize things…it’s kind of an obsession”) and I am getting really excited with all the amazing options and things to see while visiting Disneyland.  It’s been almost 10 years since I last went!

So,  I am putting our plan out into the world!  To make this work I’ll be working extra hard here on the blog and tightening up any extra spending for a while here!  I know we can do it, though and I am excited to see it all come together.  Of course, I’ll be sharing my saving and planning along the way.

Share some money-saving tips for Disney below!

Mini Vacation for Holiday and Snow Fun!

I love travelling, always have, always will. Before kids it was much simpler to just head out for a weekend getaway.  Now, even a one-night trip takes a bit of planning (not to mention saving and budgeting).  The memories we create on these trips are worth ever bit of planning, budgeting and stress, though. Experiencing new places is great for us all and I have such great childhood memories of travelling with my family- I want my kids to have the same.

We can’t always afford ‘big’ extravagant vacations…ok, we can never really afford those!  But we do our best to take the kids on vacation at least once a year.  This summer we opted for a stay-cation for lots of reasons and it was such an awesome choice.  This holiday season I knew I wanted to take the kids to play in snow.  K has been interested in snow and I had planned on taking them last year but finances and time didn’t allow for it.  I vowed we’d go this year, even if only for a short day trip.

AZ Mountain in Flagstaff

I began planning months before- planning far in advance allows for time to save up, where to go and helps when budgeting.  There a quite a few places withing a few hours drive that get snow in the winter months.  We’d planned for a day trip so I decided the shortest drive would be our destination.  For us, that was Flagstaff, Arizona.  I can’t remember where I first heard about North Pole Experience, but it might have been on Facebook.  Regardless, I found it again during my planning process and thought it’d be such an amazing experience for our family.  This is the first year they are offering daytime tickets, which are less expensive then evening and still the same amazing experience.  They also run giveaways on their Facebook page regularly!

AZ Mountain Cabin

Hubs and I decided a couple weeks before our trip that it might be a bit much for the kids to do a turn-around/day trip.  So we started our search for a place to stay overnight, with the idea that we’d leave early to get Jelly Bean to school on Monday morning (we knew she’d be a bit late, but we didn’t want her having an absence; she’s got 0 for this year!).  We started the search at hotels but quickly changed our minds.  If we were going to do it, we wanted to do it right.  Arizona Mountain Inn and Cabins was perfect because the prices were reasonable and the location was perfect! This location gave us all the conveniences of town while still offering all the splendors of nature on 13 acres!  We knew it’d be the perfect place to have the younger kids experience snow…we could head right inside to warm up once it got too cold!  We spoke with someone who was great at helping us decide which cabin was best for us based on number of beds, kids’ ages and price (we opted for Cabin 13 with a flat rate).  Side note; there are pet friendly cabins, too!

Flagstaff Vacation

If you follow on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter; you know how wonderful the whole vacation was.  From start to finish, we created memories we’ll never forget.  The cabin was gorgeous and we saved money because I brought food to cook and re-heat in the full sized kitchen.  The location was great and easy to find plus there were little ‘hills’ right outside our door.  We picked up little $5 sleds in town and we all had fun sliding down together.  When we got too cold we ran inside and started the fire to warm up.

North Pole Experience

Sunday evening we had tickets to North Pole Experience so after playing in the snow we ate some dinner (chili, perfect for the cold weather) and heading out.  We checked in and waited; Hubs was convinced they’d start late.  Right on time an Elf appeared and got the experience started by loading us onto the trolley.  We took a little trip through the magic portal to the North Pole while our tour Elf shared info about the North Pole, Santa (we learned Santa’s favorite word; can you guess it?!) and her Elf friends.  The kids were really tired and I don’t think they listened much; but they did close their eyes when the time came to go through the portal.  We arrived at the North Pole and pulled up to Santa’s Workshop.  The Elf gathered the kids towards the front and had them knock.  We were greeted by friendly elves and a room full of toys throughout the years (some great throwbacks to bring back some memories for the parents!).  We moved through to the workshop where the kids helped elves build toys.  The elves were great with the kids and helped K and Grant so I could sit back and take tons of pictures.

North Pole Experience in Flagstaff AZ

We moved from room to room helping, learning and eating!  Cookies and ‘snowman soup’ was a hit with all three of my kiddos!  We met elves, Mrs. Claus and saw Santa’s sleigh.  At the end of the journey we got one on one time with the big guy himself…SANTA!!  I love that Santa was in a room where our family was alone with him for a few minutes.  No long lines, crying kids or other distractions.  The icing on the cake? They took a family photo with Santa (and it took us 3 times to get one with all of us with eyes opened) and gave us the flash drive!  We boarded the trolley to head back to Flagstaff.  On the trolley ride back I realized I couldn’t find the flash drive!  I had all the kids’ sweaters and my own purse and I was worried I’d dropped it while boarding.  I let the Elf know and she assured me that they always check the trolley after everyone has gotten off and if they weren’t able to find it I could go to the check in desk and arrange for the photo to be emailed to me.  I felt much better!  Thankfully, Hubs found the flash drive under my seat (I swear I looked!!).

North Pole Santa

The kids loved this whole experience.  If I could do it over I would’ve booked an earlier time, though.  I feel like the day was so jammed packed full (driving, playing and then the North Pole Experience) and by the end of the time they were exhausted.  The experience was great and kept them entertained but for me; I could tell they were just so tired.

I highly recommend checking out Arizona Mountain Inn and Cabins for a family vacation (they also have smaller cabins for a romantic getaway, too.  Hubs has been talking about going for our anniversary which would be beautiful! And larger ones for bigger groups, too).  The North Pole Experience is truly a beautiful memory for both parents and kids.  Do it, at least one year.  You won’t regret it; we are so glad we got the chance to go!
